Sophia Uehara is a 2nd generation Japanese-American Production Designer based in New York City and Los Angeles.

Raised by two classically trained visual artists, Sophia grew up fascinated with the intersection of art, media, representation, and education. She completed her education at New York University, Tisch School of the Arts, and went on to production design multiple award winning features, commercials, and music videos. Her most recent feature Our Son (dir. Bill Oliver) premiered at 2023 Tribeca Film Festival, and most recent short If I Die in America (dir. Ward Kamel) at SXSW 2024. Her commercial clients include Google, Hyundai, Lexus, Nissan, Starbucks, and AT&T.

She hopes that in her work, she can make audiences second-guess their preconceived notions of a character’s given identity and open the door to new avenues of empathy and connection.

In her personal projects, Sophia delves into themes of truth and the impact of different mediums on education and perception. She is passionate about representation of diasporic identities, the experiences of BiPoC communities, and protecting women’s rights. She also loves Sesame Street, Tetris, cats, and Japanese homestyle cooking.
